Judges are very mindful of the need to guarantee that when faced with a decision that they are surely keeping those scales well balanced. Whenever a judge is faced with a lay litigant on the one hand and an experienced attorney on the other side of the argument the judge will always make sure that the scales are kept in balance by being very helpful and courteous to the lay litigant to ensure that his rights are not trodden underfoot by a slick, experienced lawyer.

For that reason you can think about representing yourself in less serious matters and where the cost of hiring a lawyer is too expensive or where you might truly be totally strapped for cash. However you should consider it carefully before acting as your own attorney because it may prove extremely costly in the long run.
