Is Your Home Ready In Case You Lose Power And Water This Winter
By: Aydan Corkern

When you live in cold weather climates you know how bad things can get when the cold rains begins to freeze, the snows can pile up, and sometimes the power goes out and you might be stuck in your homes for a few days. If you have been stuck in this kind of situation, you were probably able to look back and see all the preparations that you should have made. It is not wintertime yet and you still have time to get things done that can help you protect yourself and your home.

It does not matter a whole lot whether you live in the city or in an urban area, when the winter weather causes pipes in homes to freeze and power outages, the home can suddenly become an unpopular place to be. Some homes have gas heating and some electric. Some people have city water lines and some have wells with pumps. Either way you can be in trouble. When you have electricity that goes off and your stove is electric, how do you cook? If you have gas fuel to heat your home, you still can not stay warm because electricity runs the unit.

When you have home water lines to freeze, you can not bathe or have water for anything else. Even city systems can have problems with busted water lines during the winter. If the city has to shut off water who knows for sure when it will be back on? If you have a well and a pump and the power goes off, the pump will not work. Being in a cold region, the last place you want to be is outdoors, but what if your home is broken down with no power or water? It can be pretty uncomfortable too.

The best thing you can do when the winter weather is approaching is to get your home prepared. Keep extra gallons of water that can last you for a couple of days in case you have water lines to freeze or the power gets shut down. In case the power goes out, make sure you have plenty of canned goods on hand in case roads are impassable. If you live in a rural area where you could have a power outage for days, a generator with plenty of fuel is great to have for temporary electricity and heat. Never use a generator on the inside of the home. If you have a fireplace, have wood on hand, this way you can still keep warm and give cooking over an open flame a try as well.
