I have already described the advantages of having a Home Based Business, so now we will discuss what is involved in starting one up.
When you start working for yourself there are several things you must take into consideration.
How much can I afford to spend on advertising, materials and other costs, can I afford to lose the money I am going to put into this business, where will I get finance from? And a million other things.
So I will break this down into many small chunks which will make it much easier to digest.
How much money will I need to start this up?
That is entirely dependant upon you and your goals. You should only invest as much money as you can afford to lose, this way, if everything goes wrong you can still live without too much interference.
That aside you must think how much you are going to spend on advertising. To work this out, you should take all of your costs and assign them a percentage of your finance which you will put into them. For example, if you had $10,000 to start your Business, you could assign 10% to advertising depending on how much everything else costs.
In my opinion you should work out your initial costs first, like rent and materials for example.
Then you can take what's left over and assign it to whatever else you want to spend the money on afterwards.
How can I tell if I can afford to lose the money I invest in my Business?
Very simply estimate the most that the business will cost you and assume that it wont make any money at all for a month, obviously this will be a big loss, but it will give you an idea of what COULD happen if your very unlucky.
If it looks like way more than you can afford to lose, then don't do it until you are more prepared. But please remember that in business, there is no reward without risk. So if you don't risk your money, then you wont be rewarded.
Do I need finance? And Where can I get it from?
Do you have enough personal savings to start the business you want to? If you don't then you will need external financing.
The place where most people will get there initial financing is the bank. But there are other places and people as well.
Bank:
Mortgage for premises
Loan
Venture capitalists
Grants
And many more, but the above are the main ones.
I'm sure you know what mortgages and loans are, but chances are, you don't know what a venture capitalist is.
A venture capitalist is someone who contributes financing to a business in exchange for part ownership of the firm. This is ideal if you are starting an expensive business which you might not be able to afford, but expect high profits from.

Sociologists have studied what has been termed �cocooning� very carefully since the explosion of the world wide web. Cocooning is the process of social isolation where a society withdraws from physical interaction with each other. While it may seem odd that you need to incorporate time management tools in your effort to make ends meet by simply working from a location where you are already your home it is imperative that you remember that structured time will be by far more productive than simply working as the mood hits you. Similarly, if you are not on the top of your game with simple time management devices, you might quite possibly find yourself at the end of the day with precious little to show for the deadlines you need to meet the next morning. Miss a few deadlines, and the odds are that you will lose that wonderful business opportunity that allows you to earn extra income while working at home.

Time management tools are greatly varied, depending on your needs. Thus, it is quite possible to create a plan that works for you individually as well as for the task you will be performing. To this end, quite possibly the most important technique that will help you to remain focused while earning the extra income is to set an objective for each day that you have work to do at home. Define your goal for the, identify which projects need to be completed and how you need to pace yourself to see them through to completion. The easiest way to achieve this is simply by breaking down your project into its varied components, assigning time values to them and then meeting these deadlines one at a time. One of the most overlooked time management tools for those working earning income is the schedule and calendar. It is not enough to simply block out a period time that you will use to work, but you will need to augment this block with reminders, as well as frequent breaks; after all, earning extra income simply means that you have another source of income and working two jobs may be more than you bargained for when you took on this opportunity.

Adding frequent breaks to your schedule is a good idea. This also permits you to interact with friends and family who will not mind the extra income you are earning as long as it does not interfere with your ability to also spend time with them. In the long run, this form of scheduling will benefit you as much as it benefits them.

For example, if you are planning to open a family daycare, you do not have to have a license, but if your home is part and parcel of a covenant controlled community, or if you rent your home, then odds are good that you need to get permission from the owner or the board of directors for the homeowners' association before hanging out a shingle and earning extra income in your home. In many cases these permits are hard to come by and it is not surprising to find that those who attempt to skirt around the issue of permit will suddenly find themselves on the receiving end of letters threatening fines if they persist in conducting business without permission. This is one of the occasions where it is not easier to ask forgiveness than permission

Last but not least, do you have enough disposable income to make earning extra money a possibility? Do you have a computer system that is up to the challenge of doing the kind of work you are contemplating, or do you need to invest in some new equipment? If the latter is the case, make sure you are not racking up the credit cards so as to make a bit of income, but instead save up before you get ready to take on that work at home job

Once you get your home business started and things start running a little smooth, the next logical step will be to grow your business into a self-sustaining enterprise. A majority of the big businesses you see both on and off line began just as you did. A single unit, making enough money to pay the bills and keeping the family finances on an even keel. Offer an incentive to existing customers if they can bring in another new customer.

Additionally, offering a similar incentive can give both the new and existing customer a reason to send business your way. If you offer a $25 bounty for new customers that spend $100 with you, offer a 25-percent discount to new customers. While this may result in a loss on the first sale, subsequent sales can more than make for the expense. However, finding new customers may be tough in certain financial times, so offering existing customers additional products to go with items they already buy, may be the next logical step in building your business.

For example, if you sell curtains online, why not offer curtain rods to go along with them? When an existing customer looks to change the curtains in their room they are more likely to buy the rod from the same company and offering different types of curtain rods can help maintain their business. If another customer is in the market for curtain rods, they may also decide to upgrade their curtains from you as well.

Before you begin offering anything for sale online, you should first research the market. While curtains may not be the best example, you should find out how many different online companies are offering curtains for sale. Learn their pricing structure, shipping costs and return policies. While undercutting a competitor is a common business tactic, prices that are too low to bring in any sustainable profit, you will hurt your business in the long run. Having to increase your prices in a short time of opening, can have a negative effect on your reputation.

Remain competitive without pricing yourself out of business and then maintain a consistent pricing structure. People are willing to pay for quality and have no objection in paying for quick shipping. However, some companies lose a lot of business by charging excessive shipping and handling charge to help make up for lower prices on the goods they sell.

Did you realize there are only three types of online
promotion?... This statement may seem odd and even untrue in
your mind, but I am speaking in more general terms than you
might be thinking.

Let me explain.

The three types of promotion are Junk, Active and Passive
promotions.

JUNK PROMOTIONS ARE MONEY PITS

Junk promotions are those that seem to produce results, but by
their very nature are really only illusionary promotions.

For example, let me begin with FFA (Free For All) pages. You
might find yourself subscribing to a submission program that
tricks you into believing you are submitting your links to tens
of thousands search engines.

According to the Open Directory website, they have only approved
1705 search engines and directories for inclusion in their
database ( http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/).

I like using the DMOZ directory as an example because submitted
links are tested by human beings with integrity, for the honesty
used in site description. Search Engine Watch and other search
watchers tend to show fewer than these 1705 engines, primarily
because a lot of the engines provide very little value.

Yes, you can submit your URL to a FFA page, but FFA's usually
only permit 100 or 1000 links on their page at any one time. So,
if ten thousand people are submitting a link to an FFA page on a
daily basis, then the average life of your link is between seven
minutes and 144 minutes. I suspect the actual number of
submitters is much higher and the results are much worse. Given
that few people surf FFA pages, the chances of your submission
being of any real value is practically nill!

Most of the people telling you that you can submit your site to
tens of thousands of search engines are truly only submitting
your site to FFA pages! Beware of the false promises.

Another junk promotion method is Safe Lists. A safe list is a
mailing group that is signed up to be received by people who
want to submit their own ads. Now, most safe lists have
thousands of subscribers who are able to submit their ads daily
or weekly. The person signed up to receive the list will receive
anywhere from twenty to 140+ messages a day from the list. These
messages will be received by people only interested in promoting
their own thing who do not have the right motivation to open,
let alone read Your Advertising. As a result, thousands of
messages go out daily or weekly that will never be seen by
anyone but the sender of the ad. Where is the value in that?
There is none.

ACTIVE PROMOTIONS

Active promotions are the type that require you to go out on a
daily basis or a weekly basis and put out your advertisements.
With active promotions, you will either place your advertising
or you will not sell your products or services. Your choice is
simple --- work or starve.

Examples of active promotions include Pay Per Click Search
Engines (PPCSE's), Direct Email, Ezine Advertising, Solo Ezine
Ads, Newsletter Publishing, Ezine Ad Swaps, Classified Ads,
Auctions, Site Sponsorship and Banner Ads.

Some people are able to utilize these methods very productively,
while others are destined to drop their money into the
bottomless pit of failed Internet promotions.

PASSIVE PROMOTIONS

Passive promotions are those promotions that can continue to
provide results for you long after you have invested the work to
make them available to the Internet community.

Examples of passive promotions include: Link Exchanges,
Articles, Ebooks, Content Exchanges and Writing Testimonials for
others.

Let's look at articles as a solid example of my point.

You are reading an article that I have written to promote my own
business. This article is timeless and therefore could have been
written five years ago and still have been as valuable as it is
today.

Due to the fact that the article is timeless, it can and will be
placed in newsletters/ezines and their accompanying online
archives, on websites and in ebooks for many more years to come.

As a result, this article will continue to serve me well beyond
the time in which I wrote it and submitted it to publishers and
webmasters for public consumption and publication.

This is the best example I can give you of an excellent passive
promotional method.

AVOID THE MONEY PITS

Many try and even fewer succeed to conquer the Internet and to
produce their dreams of online wealth.

My hope is that you will be one of the people who conquer the
challenges before you and to make a nice living while working
online. It will take drive, determination, study plus trial and
error, but you can make it work for you.

Please continue to educate yourself so that you can avoid the
money pits - instead, strive to find the money barrels. It can
be done. I am living proof.

Online businesses and on-site ("real world") businesses are definitely distinct from on another despite their similarities. Other's contributions add to the insight). Because the business is online, anyone wanting to shop only need to switch on the computer, go to a search engine and enter certain keywords (or enter a web address, if available, into the field), and go to the site any time of the day or night and browse through everything—without leaving home.

This lease to yet another advantage of online businesses: inquiries into services or product orders can be made instantly through the integration of interactive software. If queries are made, support can come almost immediately. Receipts for orders are sent right away to personal email accounts where they can be stored away. The significance of this is the convenience of quick and easy accomplishment of the processes involved.

Finally, one should not forget that online businesses are accessible from all over the world, ensuring that business dealings will be expanded on a daily basis compared to on-site businesses, which are limited to local or regional areas. People in Japan or Russia, for instance, can see the product line of an online business set up by a single American mother of three who is operating her venture from her small apartment somewhere in central U.S.A. With online businesses, services and clientele possibilities are virtually endless all the time.

The Internet highway is a compact yet sprawlingenvironment where millions travel all day every day. Any business will find ongoing pleasure and growth here because of the sheer density of its traffic.

So you own a home business - that's great. You know it is important for you to set a schedule for your work hours so that customers can know when to reach you, and so that you can maintain the rest of your life as well. It is very easy to burn out when you are working 24 hours a day, much easier than it is to burn out at a regular job. The reason is that even if you don't like your regular job, there is always going to be a quitting time so you can go home or do whatever you want to do to make your life better. With a home business, you need to have this as well so that you can stay on top of things. It is far too easy to take on enough work to be working all of the time, and this only ends up making people absolutely miserable. It is way too easy to be put into a position where you are unable to stop working, and this is not going to be good for you, or for the business that you are trying to run, by any means.

There have been a lot of different articles written over the last couple of years about the concept of blogging for dollars. Many people believe that it can be done and in fact have done it and there are many others that believe that the people making money from blogging are an exception to the general rule that nobody can truly hope to make money. In addition to that, it is very easy to customize blogs. While it does require knowledge of HTML and PHP, for the most part there are easy things to learn that you can use to get started right away. It is impressive to think about that, because when you consider the construction of a content website from scratch, what you are going to find is that the people that construct it have to labour very hard in order to get everything up and running. If you don't mind using someone else's design, with a blog you can be up and running in moments and save yourself all that hassle and trouble.

Also, because it is so easy to customize blogs, it is also easy to add multiple revenue streams to them. If you are interested in revenue streams for your blogs aside from Google AdSense or a similar product, running them is going to be quite easy for you to do in a blog. You might have to completely change the layout of a content website to get the same thing done, but a blog can have them integrated in minutes. It is really a fantastic thing to do.

So all in all, the theory behind blogging for dollars is quite sound and indeed if you want to make money with a blog it is certainly something you can try. Blog about something you're interested in, because if you don't then you might have difficulty continually filling up your blog with content.

Are you an online marketer? Or do you simply promote affiliate programs?

Marketing is truly the most misunderstood word in use today on the Internet.

Let me see if I can clarify this issue just a bit.

In Marketing 101 at your local university, marketing is actually the process of Product, Place, Price and Promotion.

*** PRODUCT

No business can exist without a product or service to sell.

In a nutshell, entrepreneurs are the people who believe in a product, service or idea, so much that they are willing to invest their lives into the development of their dream.

Historically, every major corporation in the world was started by an entrepreneur with a dream and the drive to make it a reality.

However, there comes a time in the life of every corporation when those who fear the gambling nature of their founder, squash the entrepreneurial drive that made the company a viable concern in the first place. The entrepreneur will either submit to the careful nature of the stockholders, or he will be forced to leave the company he created.

The only entrepreneurs who withstand the pressure to move more carefully are those who have maintained majority control over their companies.

*** PLACE

In the offline world, place is defined by location. On the Internet, place is defined by domain name and the web hosting service chosen.

Both online and offline, place can make or break a company without respect to the quality and value of the product, service or idea.

*** PRICE

Selecting a price is determined first on a basis of whether the company wants to be seen as a discount or a value company.

Take for example Wal-Mart and Staples.

Wal-Mart is the lead discounter in the marketplace. Staples on the other hand is the specialist in office supplies.

Both sell a significant number of office supplies despite the fact that the lowest price can usually be found at Wal-Mart. As a value dealer, Staples can afford to charge more for their products than Wal-Mart.

So the question for you is whether you want to position your company as a discount or value company.

Testing has shown that products and services can be sold at any number of prices and still reach a significant number of people.

The challenge of selecting the best price for your product or service will require a certain amount of testing.

*** UNDERSTANDING THE PRICING EQUATION

Let`s assume we are selling a product. Let us also assume that we know that the product can be sold for $10 or $50. Let us also assume that if the price dips below $10 or rises above $50, then the product sales fall off significantly.

Our challenge is to determine the best rate at which to sell our product.

Testing has shown us that we can sell 1000 items a week at $10. Testing has also shown that we can sell 500 items per week at $50. And testing has shown that we can sell 650 items per week at $45.

At $10, our projected weekly earnings are $10,000. When we sell the product at $50, we know that we can earn $25,000 per week.
Most importantly, we know that we can earn $29,250 when our product is priced at $45.

With the imaginary testing we have done on our imaginary product, we can easily see that selling our product at $45 per item will earn us more money over the long haul.

Thus, when we make the decision for a national rollout of our product, then we will price our product at $45.

Of course, this is a very simplistic analysis of the point I am trying to make. Though simple, I believe this analogy will help you understand the methods of developing a product`s prices.

*** PROMOTION

Promotion, on the other hand, is the process of notifying the consumers for your product or service of your availability to serve them.

Methods of promotion vary distinctly and should be arranged to meet very specific goals.

As with product, place and price, promotion should not be left to chance. You should test every ad, every media, and every price point to determine the best bang for your promotional dollars.

*** HEADS UP!

If you are an online promoter or marketer, please factor in the most important element concerning the cost of your promotions.

What element is that? Your time!

Value your time at a certain dollar amount, and figure in your time into the cost of your promotional accounting.

I say this because too many online promoters lose sight of this concept and spend 20 hours to generate one sale while using free advertising. Even if you rate your time at the federal minimum wage, then you will have invested $105 of your time for one sale that might only net you a gross sale of $45!

*** ARE YOU TRULY A MARKETER OR ARE YOU JUST A PROMOTER?

Most people who run a business on the Internet call themselves marketers. Yet, most of these same people are really just promoters wrapped in the label of a marketer.

True marketers do not promote without a lot of advance work. They spend time planning, testing and measuring their actions and results to get the most out of every dollar spent and earned.

Entrepreneurs finesse the art of marketing as they build their company into a major enterprise.

If you are a promoter who does not keep an eye on the total marketing equation, then you are bound to fail.

If you do call yourself a marketer, then do what a professional marketer does. Make sure that every dollar spent is spent well. Make sure that every dollar earned is put to good use. Market well so that when the people of the next generation look at your life, they will see a fine example of a successful entrepreneur that they will strive to emulate.

When a person decides to go into business on their own, there is essentially three ways they can go. They can open their own office outside the home, they can have their office in their home and work outside, or they can work in the home. Single parents find being able to work for another company at home and then send their work through email or fax is a convenience in not requiring childcare. Companies also find it helpful in not having to have the space and equipment to accommodate additional workers in the office.

Billing and check processing are other occupations becoming more popular as work at home options as is management consulting and freelance writing. Being able to have assignments delivered to your email and the finished projects sent back over the internet allows many more people to find work in a tight job market.

Having the freedom and convenience of working around your personal schedule is a major draw for many people looking to work in the home. While commitments made to complete certain jobs by a certain time will make or break your ability to find repeat work, being able to work the hours that are the most convenient for you and the family is a selling point to operating a home business.

All too often, people get set in their ways, and when this happens they are unable to see that they aren’t helping their business any by refusing to change with the times. It is often hard for many people to change. Sometimes it is simply the idea of doing something differently than they have been doing it, and sometimes it is the fear that change will cause more harm than good. If you don’t like to change, for whatever reason, you should know that you might be hurting your business. Change can be very good, and in fact, in order to compete with the other businesses, you have to be able to change with the times. This is the only way that you can make sure you are able to take control of your own business and to do what you need to do in order to be a success.

There are several things that you can do to make sure that you are changing in a way that will allow you to compete. First of all, keep your eyes open and watch what your competition is doing. Don’t just look at the major competition, either, look at the little guys, and those that are just starting out. See what everyone is doing that is different or the same as you. If there is a technology that everyone is using, and it seems to be working for them, you want to seriously consider doing it as well. Remember that unless you have a good reason for doing things the old way, you will lose clients if someone has a newer and better way of doing things that you don’t offer already.

That said, remember that when you change to meet the demands of the time, you are also going to want to be sure that you never lose the things that set you apart. If you have always prided yourself on your customer service, be sure that you are never losing that, no matter how much you change. If you keep the things that make you unique, and still keep your eyes and ears open to what everyone else is doing, you are going to know when you should change and when you should keep your old ways. Also remember that you want to keep thinking of the future, and gradually changing for the better. Don’t try to change all at once, make it as gradual as you can.

For the last ten years (and frankly, for years before that), the debate has raged between those who feel like capitalism is the strongest and best form of a country’s marketplace system, and those that would prefer a form of strict, true socialism. Though it exists today in truncated form, socialism has never been fully in place in any country. The true, Lenin and Marx version of the venerated institution has never come out to play in the utopian society that it supposedly promises. And therein lays the problem. Though nothing is stopping a system like socialism from flourishing and creating the ideal society, it has simply never worked. Capitalism, on the other hand, while not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, has worked and continues to work in many of the world’s strongest nations. Why is this?

First, let’s examine what capitalism is. It is basically a free market. Nothing (or as few things as possible) is generated or paid for by the government, and thus is free of most government restrictions. With this system, competition becomes king. When the state doesn’t mandate a certain service be used, there will naturally be a fight for the service. In theory, the consumer winds in this situation. Lower prices, better service, and on and on. Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way, but it does tend to work out in the favor of the consumer. Sometimes, however, there is disagreement over what the consumer wants most. But that is another benefit of a free market system. There may have to be a king, but that doesn’t make the king the only game in town (and when it does, the government usually will step in). There will always be the benefit of choice. Don’t like the prices or service at Best Buy? Circuit City is just across the street.

This is, of course, a simplification, but the advent of capitalism and a free market world has led to a dramatic increase in the Gross National Product of many countries around the world. This is, of course, proof in itself that the system works and is the best system in place today. Like democracy (or a republic, as our system really is), there may be better systems out there; we just haven’t found them yet.

Of course, that’s not to say that capitalism isn’t without its fair share of detractors, and not to say that these detractors don’t have some reasonable things to say. There are even religious concerns with some tenets of capitalism. Some forms of religion, for instance, look down upon and forbid the lending of money with interest, a key component of out capitalistic society. Others look at a widening gap between the have’s and the have-nots and see something that is seriously out of whack. But the opportunity, proponents argue, is there for everyone. With the right entrepreneurial spirit, the best ideas, and a strong hide, anyone can make themselves a success in a capitalistic society. This is not the case in even the best case scenario for socialism. That is why, perhaps, capitalism will continue to thrive while the other systems fail. No matter how flawed, it is the centerpiece of the American dream. The thought that, no matter where you’re from, if you have the brains and the determination, you can make your life anything you want it to be. Point to something from socialism that’s even half that inspirational and you've got it.

These days, it seems like everyone wants to work
from home and make money on the Internet. But
before you even turn on your computer, the first
question you have to ask yourself is whether
you’re cut out for this kind of work.

The fact is, building a home-based business isn’t
for everyone. Some people like the commute. They
really do enjoy having a boss who tells them what
to do, and they like the routine of working
nine-to-five for an ordinary salary that can
barely pay the mortgage. Personally, I think
they’re nuts.

More reasonably, there are people who are
concerned about the risk of starting up their own
business. They’re not sure it’s worth the
investment of time and money, and they’re scared
of the responsibility that comes with running
their own company. They wonder if there is
another way to escape the rat race.

I’m sure there is. You could win the lottery or
wait for your Aunt Sue to keel over and leave you
her condo. Or maybe you could sit down with a pen
and paper and draw the blueprint for "The Next
Big Thing". Anything can happen... Right?

For me, what happened was creating a successful,
self-running Internet marketing system. It didn’t
happen without effort. It didn’t happen without
at least some initial investment of both time and
money and, of course, it doesn’t happen now
without me making sure that the taxes are filed
and the paperwork is done. But it happened.

I’m my own boss. I work from home according to my
own schedule and I get to pocket all the cash my
business makes. If you’re prepared to give an
e-business the time, the work and the money it
needs to get started and get growing, it can
happen for you too.

I was searching around for a way to increase my income. Something like a home based business that I could do on the Internet sounded very good to me. When I was looking around, I kept getting this same guy coming up in my searches. He didn't have a name, but he went by the moniker of The Rich Jerk, or RichJerk for short. I signed up for his ebook about starting a money making, home based business that I could do on the web.

In the book he mentioned getting involved with Google AdWords and Google AdSense programs. One of the sites the RichJerk mentioned to get involved with, was a package called Plug-In Profits created by Stone Evans also known as the "Home Biz Guy."

I immediately went to the site at: Plug-In-Profit Site. After reading through the material, I said to myself, "This looks like a program I could do" or something to that effect. But I wasn't quite ready to just jump in head first. So I subscribed to Stone's email list.

After reading some of Stone's emails, I convinced myself that I could indeed do it, so I set myself down and told myself, that if I do this, I needed to do it by the book.

So... I went back to his site at Plug-In-Profit Site and signed up with what Stone calls the "Internet Business in a Box."

One of the greatest benefits with this package is that Stone indeed helps you get your own web site set up. In fact, he sends you day by day instructions on getting it all up and running. He calls it the 30 Days to Success guide.

And it really is.
