If you have a home based business in which you are the only worker in, there is certain tax info you need to be aware of. First of all, it is good to understand what a sole proprietor. A sole proprietor is liable for income tax, self-employment tax, estimated tax and social security and Medicare taxes and income tax withholding. You are also liable for federal unemployment tax, filing information returns for payments to non-employees and transactions with other people and excise taxes. Schedule A Form 1040, Itemized Deductions allows you to find out what your itemized deductions are. You federal income tax will usually be less than the larger of your itemized deductions or standard deductions. With Schedule C or C-EZ you are able to report income loss form businesses you owned and operated as a sole proprietor. You can alos report wages and expenses that you incurred as a statuary employee. With Schedule F Form 1040 you can report profit or loss from farming. The Schedule SE Form 1040 Self-Employment Tax is used to figure out what the tax due on net earnings form self- employment are. For tax purposes you will need to be able to tell the difference between being self employed and a sole proprietorship. You are categorized as being self employed if you have a trade or business or you are sole proprietor. If you are a member of a partnership or limited liability company that files a Form 1065 you are also considered to be self employed, if you are involved in a trade or business. If you run this business on a part time basis you are still considered self employed. An independent contractor is someone that performs services for someone else that is not their employer and has no control over what happens to the finished product. There are a number of professions that perform duties for others but are not technically employees. This list includes lawyers, contractors, subcontractors and public stenographers. They are all independent trade people. However, determining if these people are independent contractors or not is based on an individual basis. After you have determined if you are an independent contractor or self employed, you will need to figure out which taxes you are required to pay. Once you have figured out what category you fall into you are set until something changes for you. Stay on top of your tax information. Save statements and bills and know what you can and can not deduct. Take a trip to see an account that first year that you are running your home based business and let them direct you on how to file. Once you have picked up the information you need you might be able to handle tax time by yourself. However it may be a good idea to stick with the accountant. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sign up for The DollarChurn (http://www.campaignbenchmark.com/track.php?i=7837) newsletter: "Internet Home Business Tips Newsletter" (http://www.campaignbenchmark.com/track.php?i=7838) NEW! It does not matter if you are an experienced or novice business person, a small business will be a new journey. One of the major concerns is time management. Often when people start up home based businesses they underestimate the need for time management. The thought process is that you can do work whenever you want to so a schedule is not necessary. Well, while it is true that you can make your own schedule with most home based businesses, you should still have some designated work time. Having a disciplined work schedule can be tough for some people when they are working at an employer's office. If you have a home based business the problem could excel and become even worse. However, while at an employer's office you may be written up for not making a deadline you will lose clients and customers if you do that with your own business. In an attempt to steer clear of that you should set up a work schedule for yourself. It does not have to be as routine as a typical work schedule but you need some sort of guideline to go by. If you have a short attention span then you could break up the work. Work for three hours in the morning and four hours at night. Take long breaks or work long hours four days of the week for a three day weekend. Figure out what tasks you need to get done for the week. Set up a timeline and points in the week when you want tasks completed. This will help you plan family events and still have a life while you are setting up a business of your own. During the first year of your home based business you need to keep track of productivity and when tasks are completed. There will of course always be distractions but you must work to overcome them and continue to make progress. Sometimes you have to let the voice mail pick up calls and turn the phone off. Other times you may need to take your laptop to the local coffee shop for a few hours on Saturday morning to get some work done. Be flexible when you are working to get your home based business off the ground is important. Find out what works for you. One thing that can greatly influence time management is the location and condition of your home based business office. If you don't have a pleasant place to work then you will not be encouraged to go to your office and work. While you want your office to be in a part of house that does not infringe on the rest of home, you want it to be in a place that you can stand being in. The Basement is a great home office option but not if it is a drafty place that you never venture to except to do laundry. If that s the case, it is obviously not some place you want to spend a lot of time. Not to mention time working. Unless you can make it nicer then you should try out another place for your office. Keep your office clean and professional. Don't let the kids hang out in there and play when you aren't using it. It helps to have a door on your home office so a spare bedroom is ideal. You need privacy for your work space even when you are not in it. You home based business office should be closed off from others. Taking care of the environment is everyone's responsibility--including home based business owners. Don't use the excuse that you are a small business owner so you can't afford to be green. There are a number of ways that you can show your concern for the environment. Energy consumption is one of the major ways that the environment is damaged. It is also one of the easiest things to cut. Most people think about actual appliances like air conditioners but few people think about office equipment and the appliance inside of them. However it is these forgotten office equipment pieces that suck up unnecessary energy. As the country tries to move towards more energy saving procedure there are a few easy steps you can take to do your part. A great number of businesses are starting to use equipment that is ENERGY STAR qualified. These pieces are more efficient because office equipment can draw a great amount of energy that is does not need. If you can not afford to upgrade right now, when you get replacement printers, computers, monitors or copies, you should try to buy ENREGY STAR products. There are other small steps you can take to save energy in your office. One of them is simply turning off the equipment at night. If your computer has power management software take the time to activate it. Also print on both sides of the paper whenever necessary. Recycling is a must. Shred important documents are recycle the shreds. Also make sure that you recycle electronic equipment such as printer parts and take computer parts to the appropriate places to have them disposed of. If you have small appliances like a refrigerator in your home office, go for ENERGY STAR products. Also make sure that the door is closed whenever you are not in it. Be on the lookout for any cracks in the door seals. E-mail as much as you can. Although some things have to be sent through snail mail, most things, these days, can be e-mailed. Take advantage of this and save a good amount of trees in the meantime. Business cards are nice but have as many people as possible visit your website instead. Invest in compact fluorescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are inefficient and use so much more power than fluorescent ones. Reduce the air conditioning usage by keeping the blinds or curtains pulled on hot days. The air conditioning may still kick on but it won't stay on as long. When you are not using your computer leave it in sleep mode. Only turn the computer off when you are done with it for the day. Computer use more energy to reboot than they do when they are in the hibernation mode. At the end of the day turn off the computer and unplug it to save energy. Once you have your home based business office set up you should get an office energy audit. This will help you figure out where you are wasting energy and how you can save more. Remember the more energy you save, the more money you save. Some of the best home businesses out there often are ignored. The reason why is because people are afraid of becoming a part of a fraudulent operation. However, just because an immediate income is not made via a home business venue does not mean that the business opportunity is not legitimate. Many people who sign up to try to make money by way of a home business simply just do not know how to run them. In order to make a home business work for you, it is highly advisable first of all t hat you know what you are getting your self into. Do not sign up for an offer to make money at home just because you are anxious about money and are looking for a quick solution. Also, do not sign up for an opportunity just because a infomercial or Internet video has hyped you up. A great rule of thumb to follow would be to give your self at least 24 hours to decide if you should sign up for an opportunity. Sometimes it is wise to even take up to a week before you sign on to participate in a home business program. On the other hand something can be said for waiting too long to taking advantage of money-making offers out there. If you wait months or years before you are finally convinced a home-based venture would make you a profit it may be too late. By then the product or services offered to you may no longer be needed or too many people will already have cornered the market. Therefore, wait but do not wait an exorbitant amount of time to decide if you really want to achieve financial freedom. Once you are confident you are making the right choice to get involved with a particular home business opportunity, this is the time to learn how to run it. You are strongly urged to read all the support material given to you when you sign up to participate in a money-making offer. If you do, you are sure to have the most success. Part of the advice given to people who own a home business is in how to diversify. Usually the people who make an online income do so by setting up systems to earn more than one stream of income. They also use a combination of low-cost effective promotional measures. Some of the most successful persons who have operated a business from home have stayed active within their Internet community. For instance, they have participated in blogs, forums, social sites, and so on. While networking with others online they have run across people with a variety of needs. Those needs are filled by savvy marketers who know how to run their home Internet operation. For instance, perhaps they are a part of a graphics design forum and someone is in need of a new logo. These designers often will be able to provide services while making that social connection.
